Cystic Fibrosis (CF)

A condition involving respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems.  Symptoms include pneumonia, diarrhea, poor growth, and infertility (does not affect intelligence).  Patients can be mildly or severely affected.  With severe disease, death in childhood is common, although it is more common for patients to live longer (into 30’s).  Inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, a child has a 25% chance of developing CF if both parents are carriers.  Carried in 1:30 of all people in U.S. (1:25 Caucasians, 1:46 Hispanics, 1:65 African Americans, 1:90 Asians)
